Hemingway did indeed love the Daiquiri, it was one of his favorite drinks, and is featured prominently in his novel Islands in the Stream. Hemingway began frequenting the Floridita in the early 1930s, while living in Key West. He’d make trips across the Straits of Florida, either in his friend Joe “Sloppy Joe” Russell’s boat, Anita, or later in his own boat Pilar. He became such a regular at the Floridita they added a version of this drink to the 1937 menu, the misspelled “E. Hemniway Special.” If you’re interested in what Hemingway drank, be sure to check out my book, To Have and Have Another – A Hemingway Cocktail Companion, which will be published in October by Penguin Press.
